Chapter 15
The sun was dropping over the mountain, sending long shadows over the valley. Jonty sat hunched upon a small boulder, her arms folded over her bent knees. She was in no hurry to go back to the house, to start fetching and carrying for that arrogant, demanding man.
For five days she had been at his beck and call, tending to foolish requests, biting back the words that would give him the satisfaction of knowing he was getting under her skin. Why, she wondered, was he so hateful to her, so down right ornery? What did he see when he looked at her with those gray stormy eyes? He was a very knowing man. Could he see that she was in love with him? Did the fact repulse him?
She gave a dry grunt. That first night spent in delirium, she hadn't been repulsive to him⦠at least her body hadn't.
In those first few hours she had swung between wretchedness and joyful surprise. For though Cord had sworn at, yelled at, and even threatened Jonty Rand in his high fever, it had been only her hand on his brow, her low, throaty voice that could calm him. Once, to her intense pleasure, he had turned his face into her hand and, murmuring her name, kissed her palm. She had been thankful that they were alone at the time. What gossip that act would have started had one of the hands been there to see it.
Jonty laid her head on her bent arms, remembering how she had been more thankful for their privacy when, in the early dawn hours, Cord had done something that had completely unnerved her.
His fever had reached its zenith, and she, in her nightshirt, was leaning over the bed about to lift his head and press a glass of water to his mouth when suddenly his hands fastened around her waist. As he jerked her down on top of him, she loosened her grip on the glass and it fell to the floor, rolling across the room. While she gaped at him in surprise, he pulled her head down and fastened his lips on hers. She struggled but a moment, then willingly accepted the thrust of his tongue and the tightening of his arms around her.
A big mistake, Jonty thought morosely, lifting her head and staring unseeing out over the valley. But there had been a sweet savagery in his kiss, and instead of listening to the warning flashing through her brain, she had arched herself into him and returned the kiss with equal fire. She thrilled to his callused palm sliding up her thighs, over her small buttocks, squeezing them gently before continuing to the small of her back.
When, as in a dream, Cord asked with ragged urgency, "Can't you take this damn thing off?" she had, without hesitation, sat up and whipped the nightshirt over her head. In the path of the moonlight striking across the bed, Cord's eyes grew stormy as he gazed at her breasts.
